Control is a word with many definitions which can be difficult to quantify. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, some definitions of control when used as a verb can be: a) to exercise retraining or directing influence over, b) to have power over, or c) to reduce the incidence or severity of especially to innocuous levels (e.g. pest control). When used as a noun, control can be defined as: a) an act or instance of controlling, or b) restraint.

Many people seek therapy here at Barnes & Klatt as a result of feeling out of control. This perceived loss of control can often lead to mood symptoms, such as depression and anxiety, difficulties in managing thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and difficulty in interpersonal and professional relationships.

The most important step a person can take in attempting to regain control is allowing oneself to take action. Therapy can provide a safe environment while exploring what is and what is not in your control while at the same time teach you to manage your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Being vulnerable and taking action are significant showings of strength allowing you to take control over the fear which has held you back for so long. Though you cannot control the actions of others, you can control how you respond, learn, and grow. As you stand firm in your belief in yourself, your vulnerability in taking that first step is strength. It is control. And it is you.

If you or someone you love is feeling out of control and are ready to regain your strength and power, our staff of psychologists at Barnes & Klatt are ready to help. We are here for you.
